Tips For Renovating on a Budget

by · Leave a Comment

You do not need to spend a million dollars to make it look like you live in a million dollar home. You may have big dreams when it comes to your renovation project, but all you need to do is channel your inner creative side. If you wanted to, you could probably DIY your whole house. Following these next few tips will help you to save a bundle of money while transforming your house into your dream home.

Plan of Attack:

There are plenty of things you can do yourself when it comes to renovating. You can also get the job done faster if you have some handy/creative friends and family to help. In this case, you may have to pay a small fee in food and drinks. But if they’re willing to devote their time to help, then money is no object. Here are a few things you may be able to do on your own:

-Painting

-Fencing

-Landscaping

-Stripping and polishing floorboards

-Assembling a flat-pack kitchen

-A simple tiling job

Teach Yourself to DIY:

You can easily teach yourself how to DIY, and I know this because just recently I have found my inner creative side. All you really need is some basic knowledge and some tools. Many home improvement stores offer free DIY workshops on the weekend. You can also browse online as well. You can also browse online as well. YouTube is a great resource for helpful DIY tutorials.

Take Advantage of Yard Sales/ Auctions:

You do not need to shop at Restoration Hardware to make your home look great. Pick a nice weekend day and check out some local yard sales or auctions. You can find some amazing pieces for your home at an auction, and spend close to NOTHING on it! I have found so many pieces for my apartment that turned out to be diamonds in the rough. A little sanding and a fresh coat of paint will go a long way.

Only Pay For The Important Stuff:

As much as we think we can do it on our own, sometimes we do need help. Botched DIY attempts can actually cost you more money in the long run. When it comes to DIY, you need to know your limits. It is best to always call in a pro when it comes to electrical, plumbing, or structural work, (that is unless you’re trained in these trades yourself).

Be Creative and Have fun:

Being creative and having a lot of patience will have a huge impact on how your renovations go. With affordable paint and subtle lighting, you can easily transform any room in your home. Even small changes like repainting bathroom tiles or kitchen cabinets can dramatically change the look of your home.
